The History of Willow Grove, PA

Enjoy some of the neighborhood's history brought to you by the personal injury attorneys in Willow Grove, PA, at Monheit Law.

Willow Grove

The census-designated place, or CDP, of Willow Grove, is located in Montgomery County, in the state of Pennsylvania. The community covers 2,304 acres, of which 0.28% is water. Neighboring communities include Willow Manor, Roslyn, Horsham, and Meadowbrook. The main roadways that travel within the borders are Easton Road, the Pennslyvania Turnpike, York Road, Moreland Road, and Easton Road.

History

William Penn, a Quaker and English writer, was granted land from the area. He built his home upon the area he named Manor of the Moreland in 1719. In 1792 the Township of Moreland became Willow Grove.

During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington marched his troops through the area as they headed to the Battle of Brandywine in 1777. Later the area would serve the Under Ground Railroad as a primary route along Old York Road. The slaves would travel this toward Canada to seek their freedom.

In 1896, an amusement park was constructed at the end of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company's trolley line. The park provided inspiration for parks across the country. The park was the venue for many orchestras and bands, such as John Philip Sousa, and was referred to as the "Music Capital of America" for its large crowds.

In 1982, the Willow Grove Park Mall opened. The three-story shopping mall is home to over 120 stores, such as:

  • House of Hoops by Foot Locker
  • Bae Boutique
  • Bath & Body Works
  • Bitachon Fashions
  • Bullseye Burger House
  • Lush Handmade Cosmetics
  • Yeung's Cajun Grille

Neighborhood

The community has a few public parks for the residents to enjoy:

  • Veteran's Memorial Park - located on Mineral Avenue
  • Woodlawn Park - located on Division Avenue
  • Roychester Park - located on Corinthian Avenue

The area still has a love for music, as we can see with the following inspired locations:

  • City Rhythm Orchestra
  • Steve Weiss Music Retailer
  • Settlement Music School

Some schools for the resident children to attend include:

  • Overlook Elementary School
  • Upper Moreland Senior High School
  • Let's Imagine Child Care Development Center

Demographics

The population of the CDP was 15,726 in 2010. In 2000, the count was 16,234 residents and included 6,389 households and 4,255 families. There was a decrease of 3.1% from 2000 to 2010. In 2010, the racial makeup of the community was the following:

  • 81.4% white
  • 8.2% African American
  • 3.5% Hispanic or Latino
  • 0.2% Native American
  • 4.9% Asian
  • 0.00% Pacific Islander
  • 1.1% other races
  • 2.3% two or more races

The annual income for the average household in the town was $50,378, and for a family, it was $62,163. Men brought in an average income of $40,393 versus women's average of $32,451 per year. The breakdown of occupation types for the working residents was the following:

MEET OUR MANAGING PARTNER: BRIAN MITTMAN

“I have been working since I was 14. I have probably held at least two dozen different jobs and I’ve seen people injured and hurt. One of the reasons I got involved with disability law is that I have a very good family friend who has been disabled his entire life, and I’ve seen how he’s struggled in order to keep working and try to work. When I was presented with the opportunity to get involved with what’s called “disability law,” I was really thrilled to be able to not only practice being an attorney, but helping other people who really need to know things about what their choices are, what they can do, and what their future may hold.

I am originally from Maple Glen, PA and is a life-long Eagles fan.

I have focused on helping individuals with their workers’ compensation, social security disability and long-term disability claims, as well as obtaining financial security for individuals who have had accidents.

As part of helping workers’ and their families, I have also been active in teaching continuing legal education courses to other attorneys, provide free seminars and webinars to the public on how to protect their rights, and I am active in various organizations such as the National Organization of Social Security Claims Representatives, the Injured Workers’ Bar Association and the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group.”
