Da Vinci robot surgery has been touted as a high-tech surgical option that provides patients and surgeons with increased surgical precision and reduced recovery time. A surgeon controls the da Vinci Surgical System’s multiple robotic arms from behind a magnified, high-resolution image of the patient’s surgical site.
Da Vinci robots were used in about 400,000 surgeries in the U.S. in 2012, most commonly for hysterectomies and prostate removal. In only a few years, five deaths and hundreds of adverse events associated with da Vinci robots have been reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Intuitive Surgical recently issued a warning that certain versions of the robot’s scissors may develop energy-leaking micro-cracks that can burn patients. When asked why the company is not recalling the potentially defective scissors, Intuitive said they “considered the risk to patients of removing the product from the field … [and] determined that the risks of device removal before a replacement could be offered outweighed the risks of leaving the existing product in the field.”
In other words, patients undergoing robotic hysterectomies, prostatectomies and gastric bypass – procedures that commonly require tissue to be cut – could be at risk of suffering burns from one of these crack-prone instruments.
