Major ladder company Werner has recalled about 78,000 multipurpose ladders, informing consumers that the models can break during use and lead to serious falls, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
At least one personal injury has been linked to the recalled product; a ladder broke underneath a consumer, leading to injuries to their left side and elbow. The ladders in question are described as multipurpose telescoping aluminum ladders; Werner has recalled 5 models in all:
The model number can be found printed on a label on one of the ladder’s rails. Recalled ladders should also be identified through their date codes. If you’re Werner ladder has been recalled, you’ll find either 121744XX or 011844XX stamped in the metal on the inside of your ladder’s leg.
The recalled ladders were sold exclusively through Lowe’s and Home Depot stores between April 2018 and May 2018. Werner is offering full refunds to consumers who purchased an affected ladder; return your ladder to the store where it was purchased for more details.

No details have yet been released on why the ladders can break during use. We do not yet know whether or not the ladders are defective in design, but Werner’s choice to recall the entire line, rather than a small subset of the ladders, suggests that design may be an issue.
