Weekly Accident Roundup For August 9th, 2017

In this week's accident roundup for the Philadelphia region, we take a look at three fatal accidents, an incident involving airplane turbulence, and an underground fire leading to multiple firefighter injuries.

Motorcyclist Killed After Colliding With Car In Philadelphiatotaled motorcycle in street

A motorcyclist was killed in an accident involving an SUV on Kelly Drive in Philadelphia on Friday, August 4th. The accident happened around 10 PM at the intersection of Fountain Green Drive. The motorcyclist was transported to Hahnemann Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after. The other motorist, an 18-year-old woman, did not suffer any serious injuries in the accident.

According to police, the woman was turning left onto Kelly Drive when she struck the motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was ejected from his seat and landed on the roadway, suffering fatal injuries on impact. The accident is currently being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department.

Teen Killed In Fatal Montgomery County Car Accident

A 17-year-old was killed in a car accident involving an off-duty Montgomery County Sheriff's deputy in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 3rd.

Norristown Police had responded to reports of suspicious activity and pulled over a white Hyundai Sonata. Before the officers could ask for vehicle registration, the driver sped away. Shortly after, the car ran a red light and collided with an SUV being driven by an off-duty Sheriff's deputy. Five teens were inside the Sonata and were fleeing from an alleged robbery.

The Sheriff's deputy involved in the crash is expected to recover from his injuries. One teen died in the crash, while the four others are being treated for injuries at Paoli Hospital.

10 Injured By Airplane Turbulence Before Landing In Philadelphia

Three passengers and seven crew members were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries after experiencing extreme turbulence on a flight from Athens, Greece to Philadelphia. The turbulence was unexpected and occurred shortly before landing. Flight attendants had just handed out drinks, which were flung into the air - covering the ceilings, walls, and floors of the plane with liquid.

It's believed that these injuries were caused by sudden clear-air turbulence, which allowed for little warning to passengers. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, turbulence caused 44 injuries in 2016, which is more than double the total of 21 reported in 2015.

5 Firefighters Injured While Fighting Blaze in West Chesterfirefighters using hose

West Chester firefighters were called in to investigate smoke on Wednesday, August 9th and discovered high carbon monoxide levels and an underground fire. This led to a call for evacuations in downtown West Chester. 5 firefighters became ill after inhaling toxic fumes from the high levels of carbon monoxide and were sent to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Pedestrian Killed In Philadelphia Hit-And-Run Accident

A 52-year old woman from North Philadelphia was killed in a hit-and-run accident in the early hours of Sunday, August 7th. Ann P. Broderick was walking on the 1300 block of Race Street at around 3:20 AM when she was struck by a white Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. Police are still searching for the suspect and have released surveillance videos of the man and the vehicle.

Legal Options After An Injury Or The Death Of A Loved One

An unexpected serious injury or death of a loved one can change your life forever and affect your entire family. While some accidents may be unavoidable, many serious injuries and deaths are caused by the negligence of someone else. Our society has certain rules which are designed to keep our communities safe. When one member of the community violates these rules and another person gets injured or dies, it's important to hold the negligent party responsible and seek justice for the victim and their family.

If you or a family member has recently been injured or killed in a preventable accident, we can help. Personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits can help hold guilty parties accountable for their actions and make sure that families recover the financial compensation they need for damages related to the injury. MEET OUR MANAGING PARTNER: BRIAN MITTMAN

“I have been working since I was 14. I have probably held at least two dozen different jobs and I’ve seen people injured and hurt. One of the reasons I got involved with disability law is that I have a very good family friend who has been disabled his entire life, and I’ve seen how he’s struggled in order to keep working and try to work. When I was presented with the opportunity to get involved with what’s called “disability law,” I was really thrilled to be able to not only practice being an attorney, but helping other people who really need to know things about what their choices are, what they can do, and what their future may hold.

I am originally from Maple Glen, PA and is a life-long Eagles fan.

I have focused on helping individuals with their workers’ compensation, social security disability and long-term disability claims, as well as obtaining financial security for individuals who have had accidents.

As part of helping workers’ and their families, I have also been active in teaching continuing legal education courses to other attorneys, provide free seminars and webinars to the public on how to protect their rights, and I am active in various organizations such as the National Organization of Social Security Claims Representatives, the Injured Workers’ Bar Association and the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group.”
